Student in the Spotlight: Shivan Vaidya, 12 years old
Shivan Vaidya resides in Purani Mandi, district Mandi (Himachal Pradesh) and has from a locomotor disability.
Before Sahyog started providing services to Shivam Vedh, he was completely dependent on his parents for even simple daily task. He could hardly sit and stand properly and he would get fits, unable to control his anger. His whole body was stiff and he was not able to use his right hand entirely.
Under Sahyog’s care through the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan program, Shivan's life has improved drastically. He receives physiotherapy on regular basis and has been provided splints for his hand, a gaiter for his legs, a back belt for support, and a wheelchair.
Now Shivan is able to sit and stand without any support. When he wears calipers he can walk on his own. The mobility in his hand is increasing, and now he can shake hands with other people. His progress has given him the independence to complete daily tasks on his own, such brushing, taking meals, drinking and using the washroom. He is able to recognize and name colors, vegetables, fruits, animals and numbers. It is a joy to see the smile on his face as he plays and draws pictures, on of his favorite hobbies.
