Rajeev Gandhi Creche Scheme

Crèche services are mainly carried out by NGOs who are given grants under this project. The implementing agencies in each state are the Central Social Welfare Board, the Indian Council for Child Welfare and the Bhartiya Adim Jati Sevak Sangh. Under this project, workers in the crèches are given training in childcare, first aid, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation for children, emergency services, hygiene, pre-school education, child nutrition, psychosocial care, and much more. To ensure proper services, independent bodies monitor the crèches.

This project requires crèches to adhere to strict standards. Crèches must have a minimum of 6-8 sq. feet per child and must be well lit, with proper ventilation and fans. The crèches should have play areas, toilet facilities, and sleeping arrangements suitable for young children. Essential educational material for pre-school should also be available. Cooking areas must be monitored and separate from child-designated areas, and the food provided to the young children should be of nutritional value. We also stress the importance of the crèches to be linked with local health centres and Anganwadis, so they may effectively address the children's health concerns. The crèche may charge families a maximum of Rs 20 for BPL families and Rs 60 for other families. BPL families are given priority.
